JB Staycation Part 2: FOOOOOD!

I am back with part 2 of my staycation at JB, the FOOOOD!!

Hui Lau Shan (许留山)
Lot J3-20, Johor Bahru City Square, 106-108,
Jalan Wong Ah Fook 80000 Johor Bahru
Mango Sago on the left and Mango Chewy Ball (favourite) on the right

Hui Lau Shan is located at City Square shopping mall level 3. So convenient, right? It is about SGD $4++ per bowl which I find quite okay with the amount of “liao”. Personally, I love the chewy ball a lot. It gives the whole dessert a different texture together with the mango meat. I can already foresee myself coming back for more mango dessert.

Tang Shi Fu (汤师)
J4-21, Jalan Wong Ah Fook 80000 Johor Bahru
Dried Scallops & Petite Abalone Mixed Rice RM 17.90
Angelica Dang Gui Replenished Soup RM15.90
Scholar Excellence Soup RM 23.90

Pan Fried Eggplant with Scallop in XO Sauce RM 18.90

Our favourite among the 4 dishes is definitely the Dried Scallops & Petite Abalone Mixed Rice!! The dish is worth every single cent spent. Although the portions is very small, the ingredients inside is a lot. The rice is soaked fully with the essence of the scallop and abalone with sweet gravy topping it off. The taste is so addictive that both me and G can’t stop eating it until we finished very single bit of it! One other thing that we tried and highly recommend is the Ginger Tea with Brown Sugar (RM 6.90). The ginger taste is not too strong but at the same time, provides tingling warming sensation to our tummy which helps a lot with digestion from the foods we eat earlier on.

Tang Shi Fu is located at level 4. Do check it out if you walk by and in need of some tonic soup. However, this is definitely on a pricey side so do take note when ordering.

Shoon Fa Bak Kut Teh (顺发肉骨茶)
236 Jalan Sutera 1, Taman Sentosa, 80150 Johor Bahru
Daily: 8am to 5pm

Look at the overflowing of food!

And of course some other side dishes!

We had Shoon Fa Bak Kut Teh (顺发肉骨茶) for breakfast on day 2. I been here a few times before and I love going back to have my BKK craving fix. Shoon Fa Bak Ku Teh is not the usual peppery taste like Singapore. The soup is clear, sweet and super yummy!!

What I like about this shop is that you can add lots of ingredient into the soup. For us, we added 9 extra ingredients into our bak kut teh. Super shiok!!! We literally can’t walk anymore after that meal!

Considering the amount of food we ordered, the bill only came up to less than 100 ringgit! (Yes, we really ordered a lot!!) Which is super worth it!

BlackBall
KSL City Johor Bahru Lot L2-132

I always wanted to try this so when I saw a stall at KSL, I knew I can’t miss it. I ordered the Signature Black Ball while G ordered the red bean smoothie. Overall, the taste is not up to my expectation. Personally, I feel it is like a rojak. Everything just throws inside. But sadly, it does not complement with each other that well. But it is a good experience so worth trying it. Also, the red bean smoothie is just red bean ice kacang. Not that impressive too.

Hiang Kee Seafood Restaurant
Jalan Keris, Taman Sri Tebrau 80500 Johor Bahru, Malaysia
Opening Hours: Daily 11am to 3am
Just look at this!!

For dinner, we have it at Hiang Kee Seafood Restaurant. Most Singaporean including me, love coming here for seafood as the prices is almost 50% off comparing to having it at Singapore.

The signature dish is definitely the Butter Crayfish! The Crayfish is so fresh and succulent. Coated with a evenly spread of butter and fry until crispy. We totally did not regret braving through the rain to have this dish!

We ordered in total 5 dishes including Chicken Essence frog leg which is not shown as I had forgotten to take a picture. When I realized it, G and i have already finished more than half of the food… Anyway, the prices of all the food including 2 bowls of white rice is 140 Ringgit which is about SGD $52+. This is definitely cheaper than most seafood restaurant which is why Singaporeans keep coming back.

I can’t wait to go back to JB soon!!!

Siew Chin

JB Staycation Part 1: The Puteri Pacific

My very first staycation at JB.

I wanted this to be a surprise for G so I gave him one clue everyday for the next 2 week like ‘we are taking bus’, ‘we ate this food once in March together’, ‘we going to wake up early in the morning to see something’ etc. I can’t believe he didn’t manage to guess it! Guess I am getting better at surprising people. Hehe...

Due to my budgets, the choices I have are limited. In the end, I managed to find The Puteri Pacific Hotel.

The Puteri Pacific Hotel is located at the heart of Johor Bahru with 500 rooms which made up of 4 different room types: Princess Deluxe (33 sq meters), Imperial Deluxe (37 sq meters), Executive Floor Deluxe (33 sq meters) and Junior Suite (58 sq meters). The difference between Princess Deluxe and Executive Floor Deluxe are the privilege given such as private check-in and check-out and laundry services etc.

For this trip, I was staying in Princess Deluxe room. The room is spacious enough to accommodate 1 Queen Size Bed and 1 Single Bed!

The location of this hotel is just 10 minutes walk away from City Square Mall. The hotel also provides all basic amenities and facilities. For me, I love the bathtub! I actually have 3 bubble baths during the stay!! But if you are not into bubble bath, you can go swim, play a tennis/squash, work out at the gym, have a relaxing sauna session or get pampered with their spa treatment. For me and G, we did not use other facilities simply because we are lazy… Yes, we bought our swimming costume and workout outfits but we spend our time sleeping at the hotel. :P

One thing I love about this hotel is the TV Show! While we are staying there throughout our 3 days 2 nights, we are entertained by the X-men movie. SHIOK!!!

However, this hotel has flaws too.

The blanket given is quite dirty. It is not even cover properly with the blanket cover. We saw lots of I don’t know.. Milo? Menses? kind of stain at the last day of stay..(Puke...)

Another thing is the control of the room. Maybe I am the stupid one but I just can’t seem to control the water temperature when getting a shower or adjust the air-con to the right temperature.

OMG just how does this work?? G said low mean the fan speed but low also can mean temperature right? Anyway, I tried the button to see the difference but the only thing happen is that there is a “click” sound. Give up…

Lastly, the free internet access provided. They actually give prepaid card internet which expires within 24 hours and have snail-like speed!! I can’t use my Instagram, Facebook, Safari, Twitter, Whatapps… basically almost everything… Not to mention, only one person in the room can have access at a time. So if you are staying there, best to get your own internet access.

Oh well, for the price I paid, the hotel is still not bad. G actually like it so if you are not picky like me, you just found yourself a nice hotel.

That’s it for now. Till then!

Siew Chin
